WE WERE PERIL-IZED LAST NIGHT

Another noteworthy Michigan band that'll impress the heck out of you is Peril. We caught their astounding show at Ten Bells in Grand Rapids last night.

Peril are a power trio from "northern Michigan" (that's as much as guitarist Jeff Hudson would admit to) that plays note perfect and fun covers, as well as originals. They have great voices, an upbeat, fun stage presence, and a "gimmick" that sets them apart from other bands -- they switch instruments. At one point, Jeff handed his guitar to bassist Adam Crawford, while Dave Crawford came out from behind his drum kit to play bass -- leaving Jeff to handle the timekeeping duties. And they pulled it off, too.

The band had the place jumpin', with many dancers (mostly female, of course) down front to enjoy themselves (and put on a show of their own a time or two). I've never had so much fun at Ten Bells.

Check out Peril...and spread the word.

Keep Purple!

DOS GRINGOS

Beth and I caught a very cool duo in Grand Rapids last week. They're called Dos Gringos, and they're extremely good.

The Gringos are two members (Brad Muller and Michael Sullivan) of the now defunct Mission Orange group that made quite a showing of itself in West Michigan not too long ago.

Brad and Michael are way talented and driven to succeed.

If you haven't had the pleasure of hearing their tasteful blend of blues, jazz, country and cover tunes, please seek out the Gringos. They're worth your time and support.

SEABISCUIT

If you haven't yet seen this movie, please do so. It's magic from start to finish. The screenwriting is superb, the acting is Oscar caliber and the story is just plain engrossing.

Seabiscuit may have riveted a nation back in the Depression when everyone desparately needed a hero, but I think this movie has come at the right time, with the right message, for our own cynical, jaded, and uncertain times. The theme of redemption, loyalty and hope ("You don't throw a whole life away just 'cause it's banged up a little") is as needed now as it ever was.

Don't miss this one!

Keep Purple!
