I can die a contented man. I saw Paul McCartney at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Friday, October 14th. It was the greatest concert I've seen in 30 years.
Before he came onstage, Paul showed a giant screen video montage of his life from childhood through the Beatles ("And now here they are...The Beatles!") to Wings to the present day. Even the slide show was exciting. What a pre-show build-up! It's not as if anyone could forget his legendary status, but it was a thrilling way to open a show nonetheless -- and no one else but Paul McCartney could do it that way. Who else has had a life like his?
Anyway, the last video clip -- of Paul playing with U2 at some recent benefit gig (Live 8, maybe?) -- faded away and the huge curtain parted and Paul and his band stood on this very clean set with a huge backdrop of some 40 video screens that they used throughout the show. He opened with Magical Mystery Tour, the crowd went wild, and then he played one hit after another:

Paul McCartney totally blew away U2 last month. Not even in the same league. U2 is cool and all that, but they take themselves way too seriously. And for all their talk of using technology to make their concerts a spectacle, Paul's stage show was 10 times the spectacle. Plus, they can't match the 40 years of hits written by Paul McCartney.
In other words, I might as well quit buying concert tickets now. I will never see a show that grand again.

Yes, PurpleCrayon Direct is still around. I'm still working with Artists. But I haven't been blogging as much as I used to.
That's about to change.
In addition to my riffs about advertising and marketing in the 21st century, I intend to use my platform as Creative Director of PurpleCrayon Direct to feature new and exciting interviews with people working in the Arts (for example, David K. Tedds, independent CD re-issue maestro, and Xenia, lead singer and creative force behind New York's Sky Salt band). I want to spotlight people who deserve recognition and promotion.
So I'm lining up interviews that will begin appearing in the next few weeks. Watch for them.
Keep Purple!
Trans-Siberian Orchestra is touring again this holiday season. Their show is a must-see, the most spectacular and magical of all concert experiences. Don't miss it. See the TSO web site for venues and dates.
